X Prize Set at $10 Million; DOE Pledges $3.5 Million for Awareness Campaign

The X prize, which is an international automotive competition to design, build, and bring to market a car that exceeds 100 miles per gallon, has been set at $10 million. To date, more than 60 teams from nine countries have signed up to compete for the prize. Applications to compete for the prize will be taken until mid-year. There are two vehicle classes competitors can design for: mainstream and alternative. Mainstream vehicles must carry at least four passengers and have four wheels. Alternative vehicles must carry at least two passengers and can have any number of wheels. The mainstream vehicle winner will take home a prize of $7.5 million, while the alternative vehicle winner will garner the remaining $2.5 million. Qualifying cars will compete in cross-country stage races in 2009 and 2010, and the prize will go to the car that finishes fastest. The Department of Energy has also announced that it will award a grant of $3.5 million to the X Prize Foundation for education, outreach , and awareness

Kansas Starting "Green Teams" to Focus on Recycling and Waste Reduction.

The good news in Kansas started in 2007 when all 101 state agencies implemented recycling programs. At the beginning of 2008 the state created the Kansas Green Team website with registered profiles for each agency. The next step is for state agencies to begin formally tracking the results of recycling and waste reduction efforts. An electronic form will be available on the Kansas Green Team website by early Spring 2008 for reporting yearly recycling amounts.

House Energy Committee Releases Second Climate Change White Paper

The second in a series of Climate Change White Papers has been released by the House Energy and Commerce Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee. The White paper discusses potential legislative provisions that could encourage developing countries to curb their emissions of greenhouse gases. The previously released White Paper (Fall, 2007,) stated a support for cap-and-trade system. This paper further outlines a Carbon-Market design and discusses possible non-market based regulations as well. The complete paper can be found here.

The USDA has brought together many of its online sustainability resources under one URL. WWW.greeningusda.gov provides easy links to USDA scorecards and to other Department environmental programs such as the USDA's Green Purchasing site. New to that site is BioPreferred program already utilized by several other federal agencies. The USDA has recently developed contract templates for incorporating biobased products into contracts for operations and maintenance, vehicle maintenance, grounds maintenance, and minor construction services.
